In a flagrant violation of privacy, personal photos stored on iCloud were recently hacked from celebrity cellphones and leaked onto “<em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">4chan,”</strong></em> a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images anonymously. One suspected cause surrounding this incident is that a group of celebrities attending a recent awards ceremony were somehow hacked using the venue’s public Wi-Fi connection.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-weight: inherit;">Many of these celebrities, like Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, are young </span><span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/reports/2014/millennials-breaking-the-myths.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(0, 0, 255); border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><b style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: orange;">millennials</span></b></a><b style="background-color: white;"> </b></span><span style="color: #666666; font-weight: inherit;">(age 18-27) who grew up using social media networks such as Facebook, MySpace and most recently, Instagram, SnapChat and more, and consider online social sharing to be part of their daily communication routine.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Despite their obvious celebrity status, many of these stars are no different than other millennials. They are at ease with online technology and comfortable sharing their personal info online. Unfortunately, the consequences of this comfort level have led them all—famous or not—to engage in risky online behaviors.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The Federal Trade Commission reports that people between the ages of 20-29 are the most-victimized age bracket when it comes to identity theft, making up 20 percent of all reported victims last year (and that’s followed closely behind by ages 30-39). This is partly because college students in particular are heavy social media users with smartphones (and often used without passwords).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Many of these millennials are leaving the parent’s nest and flying off to college dorms, unaware that unless they take certain online security precautions, they too can become easy targets for identity theft. In fact, most recently and for the second time in less than three months, hackers have broken into Stanford University’s computer network, and other university servers have been put at risk this year, including MIT, North Dakota University, and the University of Maryland.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Why are students so easy to target? For one thing, college students don’t have a credit history, making their blank slates easy to steal. They don’t usually do a regular check of their credit reports, so If their identity <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">is </em>stolen, it can go undetected for even years.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; padding: 0px 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Here are just a few tips for college students to keep their online identities safe on (and off) campus:</div>
<ol style="border: 0px; font-family: proxima-nova-n4, proxima-nova, sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; list-style-position: outside; margin: 0px 50px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Don’t use public WiFi.</strong> College campuses, coffee shops and restaurants are rife with WiFi. Never shop online, log into credit accounts or do any banking transactions with your bank while on a public connection.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Be alert when shopping online. </strong>Make sure you only buy from sites that have the security lock symbol next to the URL which can help ensure the website has taken appropriate measures to protect your info. While not foolproof, it will certainly lessen the risk.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Never share your passwords with others</strong>. Not even your fraternity brothers or your BFF. Not for website sign-ins, email, online banking or access to the school’s library. Think about it…what if you shared a password with someone you know and they later decide use it to do something stupid on one of your social networks or with your bank account? It’s more than just a trust issue, and not worth the risk.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Have complex passwords that you <span style="border: 0px; color: #cf2626; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">don’t</span> tape under your desk. </strong>Make a habit of having several different “difficult to guess” passwords that you change regularly, and don’t store them on your PC, in a notebook or on mobile devices. Don’t use easy to find phrases like your birthday or last four digits of your social security number either.While it may seem easier for you to have one password for multiple websites, it leaves you wide open for thieves to hack your data. With one password, they can sign in to your email account and have a field day with your email—and everything else associated with it.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Size Matters.</strong> Also, do the math—the length of your password is just as important as its complexity because longer passwords make it harder for hacking software to determine your combinations of letters, symbols and numbers.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Don’t click that link. </strong><span style="color: #666666; font-weight: inherit;">There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Same goes for website pop-ups that tell you that you have a virus. With so much pirated software in the market, there is an increased chance that some sort of malware is involved.</span></li>

For safety, verify the source with that friend before you open.</li>

It’s worth it though because it’s much easier to catch an identity thief early on by keeping regular tabs on your credit report than it is to make a gazillion calls later to set your record straight.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 5px 15px; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Trust no one. </strong>Imagine finding out when applying for a loan that someone has stolen your ID and has been opening accounts using your name—and it turns out the thief is a former neighbor or relative! Only carry physical copies of the ID that you actually need, like a driver’s license and student ID. Shred credit card and bank statements and any paper documents that have sensitive financial information rather than just throwing them in the trash.</li>

<span style="color: #363636; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">Raising teens and 'tweens in
today’s digitally connected world is complicated. Parents often worry about
what their kids are doing online. That’s why the best way to combat
cyberbullying, online predators, and to protect the online/offline reputation
of kids is to become “</span><a href="http://www.cyberwise.org/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">cyberwise</span></a><span style="color: #363636; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">”
– not just about the tools, but about behaviors behind them.</span></div>

<span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">The first impression we give to the world is frequently online.
Everything we post on the Internet, and everything posted about us by others,
contributes to our overall reputation. When positive, it’s great, but when not,
it can be disastrous. As Cyber-safety expert Sue Scheff summed up in a recent
Huffington Post <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sue-scheff/smile-snap-click-and-post_b_3067990.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">article</span></a>, “Drunk driving literally ends lives.
But digital drama can potentially end a bright future for your child and their
dreams.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">A teen's digital footprint can impact their college
opportunities (and future employment). For instance, this <a href="http://press.kaptest.com/press-releases/kaplan-test-prep-survey-more-college-admissions-officers-checking-applicants-digital-trails-but-most-students-unconcerned" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">recent study</span></a> reports that 30% of college
officers view the social media pages of applicants.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span style="border: none windowtext 1.0pt; color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">1) Role Model:</span></strong><span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> Many
kids are “friends” online with their parents, and it’s just as important to be
a good role model online as it is in real life. Oversharing can be risky; think
before you post photos and information about your life, and especially about
theirs. Your political, religious or controversial posts don’t just impact your
own reputation, they impact your child’s reputation and behaviors as well.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span style="border: none windowtext 1.0pt; color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">2) Establish a Foothold:</span></strong><span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><a href="http://urbangeekwebdesign.com/blog/digital-real-estate/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;"> Digital
real estate</span></a> is becoming a serious business. Shocking as it may
seem, it’s smart to register a domain for your child at birth. This helps them
establish a foothold online before someone else does, and later they will thank
you for it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span style="border: none windowtext 1.0pt; color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">3) Manage Their Digital Footprint:</span></strong><span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> Periodically
check search engines for your child’s name and online IDs to see what’s
appearing there. Remove negative remarks, photos, etc. as soon as discovered.
Consider setting up a <a href="http://www.google.com/alerts" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Google alert</span></a> for regular updates of their
web mentions, news, etc. Continue maintaining their digital footprint until
they are old enough maintain it for themselves.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span style="border: none windowtext 1.0pt; color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">4) Make Passwords Private:</span></strong><span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> For
most adults, “knowledge is power,” but for today’s youth, “shared knowledge is
power.” It is ok for kids to share some things, but they need guidance on how
to do it safely. <a href="http://www.pewinternet.org/2007/12/19/teens-and-social-media/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Recent reports</span></a> reveal that nearly 50% of
14-17 year-olds share their passwords. Teens commonly do this as a symbol of
trust, but they run the risk of having their passwords misused if they
have a falling out. No lecture needed, just chat with your kids and find out
what they already know about identity theft and how to avoid it. (See the blog “<a href="http://www.cyberwise.org/BlogWise.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(244, 115, 33); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f47321; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Fun With Passwords</span></a>” for some ideas on how to
make safe passwords.)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span style="border: none windowtext 1.0pt; color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">5) Keep Reminding, "There is no delete
button on the Internet”:</span></strong><span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> Like in Las Vegas, what
happens online, stays online. And remember: It’s not just words that travel,
but a picture says a thousand words, and videos sometimes say even more.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.0pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #363636; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">If you need help understanding how all of this can impact your
child’s (and your) online reputation, you might consider taking our newest

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Social change is the transformation of social institutions and political and
economic systems over a period of time. There are many reasons for social
transformations to occur, and while some of these changes are swift, many of
them are a slow, evolutionary process. There are many variable consequences to
social change, and it is often divisive. Some changes in social patterns are
intentional, but many are unplanned and usually the rate of social change will
vary.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
David Reisman developed the term social character to mean personality patterns
common to members of a particular society. He views pre-industrial societies as
promoting tradition-directedness, or rigid conformity to time-honored ways of
living. This coincides with Max Weber’s theory that the “truth” is always the
same to “what always has been” to traditional people, and social change occurs
when the unquestioned truths of an earlier time are challenged. Tying in with
this notion, W. Ogbum’s (1964) “culture lag theory,” claims that material
(technological or aka “modern”) societies adjust more swiftly than non-material
cultures that value ideas, norms and ideologies. In other words, there is a
“lag time” after a new idea or invention is introduced during which the
non-material culture is still adapting to new material conditions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
A good example of this notion is the invention of the automobile, which has
made a significant impact on society and the world. When this modern device was
introduced, non-material culture felt that it caused people to “move too fast”
and that it transitioned society away from the cultivation of smaller, safer,
private communities. This was initially perceived as a detriment to the moral
fabric of society, but eventually, convenience and speed prevailed. As the
influence of this invention grew (along with other devices of modernity),
industrialization and urbanization increased and the non-material culture of
rural areas began to erode. Over the past five decades, the automobile has
continued to have positive influences on society such as providing mobility for
the physically impaired, emergency healthcare assistance and protection of
communities during disaster with emergency vehicles. It has also created
negative impacts on society, including political and economic greed (oil
crisis, war, recessions), the environment (global warming, smog), and our
health and welfare (cancer, car accidents, etc.).<br /> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
There are other countless ways that modernization has significantly impacted
social change, and as a result, a great number of people in modern societies
today have the privacy and freedom to express their individuality. New
technologies such as the internet and social networking, for example, create
new opportunities and increase options available to society. Interactions
between people become more global, and the exchange of ideas change the
structures of human groups and behavioral problems. However, the introduction
of these technologies also introduce new social behaviors that are rapidly
creating a monumental shift in society and the way we communicate, invent,
emote, discover and even conduct business. It also creates new conflicts,
problems with identity, social deviance and other hidden factors.<br /> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
My particular interest in social change and what it means to me relates to the
effects of post-modernity in society, or rather the social characteristics of a
postindustrial society. While urbanization and industrialization has allowed
for progressive thinking, the idea of “progress” has not necessarily always been
effective. Higher crime, poverty, and suicide rates have resulted from the
modernization of society as well as the formation of a entirely new set of
class systems. Wherever modernization has occurred, there are always tradeoffs,
such as cures for some diseases yet an increase in others that formed as a
direct result of new technologies (heart attacks, cancer). Media influence has
contributed to a rise in importance of other-directedness (the practice of
imitating others) and places an importance on the mimicking of current trends
and fashions. This often causes people to conform to their peers and diffuses
original thinking. This “other-directedness” in society can have a positive
impact (going “green” for example) but it can also be detrimental (rehab brat
behaviors by celebrities). Naturally, in a pop-driven culture society like the
United States, teenagers who are still forming their own identities are
particularly influenced by this.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
In many ways, I agree with Ferdinand Tonnies that much of modernity has caused
an erosion of the human community, and that the Industrial Revolution weakened
the social fabric of family by introducing a business-like efficiency. However,
the unique “privatization” that new media provides also creates a unique social
bond that has never existed before. I am concerned that the diminished use of
physical human contact is biologically unhealthy for the body and spirit, yet
there is a unique communal socialization that can also have many positive effects
through the use of technology. For example, people now have a group--and a
personal--voice in society and their opinions are often shaped through
blogging, social networks, chat rooms and websites. If society does not agree
with a social behavior, they now can unite and be heard almost instantaneously.
I am perplexed and in awe of this powerful social influence and am fascinated
by the postmodern impact of this change. After all, this new sense of community
can be used to help poor countries grow economically. However, there is a price
for everything, and although theoretically their health and well-being would
improve ,who is to say that helping a poor country economically is good for
them from a cultural standpoint? Money does not necessarily buy happiness, as
the familiar cliché goes. Many a “poor” village has more peace and longevity
than a city of thousands, and there is something to be said for that.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Regardless, in “the end,” I still believe in the pursuit of a healthy and
harmonious society, and I believe that by gaining a better understanding of
different cultures and how they adapt to new ideas and how they process their
beliefs and these ideas, we can help transform social, political and economic
systems in a constructive way to create positive social change.</span><br />

Year Grammy</b></i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While watching the 2013 Grammys with my husband and my two Millennial-aged children, an amusing moment occurred. When the pop-rock trio “Fun” performed a song entitled “We Are Young,” my husband exclaimed, “Folk music is back!” My 25-year-old daughter retorted, “No, no it’s not, that’s Indie,” and a debate ensued. There were only 22 award categories in 1987 when she was born, including “Folk.” This year, there were 30 — excluding “Folk” but including <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Music Video, Music for Visual Media</em>, <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Alternative,</em> and more. Fun went on to win the Grammy for <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Song of the Year</em> for “Carry on.” Ironically, in today’s day and age, it seems when it comes to social action, Folk is to Indie what Hippies are to Millennials. Sort of.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">____________________________________________</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the first generation to grow up in a newly-connected, digital world enters full-fledged adulthood, this tribe of so-called “Millennials” (young people between the ages of 18-32) have become an indicator species of sorts. After all, where better to look in order to assess the effects of a hyper mediated world?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Currently numbered at 79 million, Millennials are expected to outnumber the Baby Boomer population 78 million to 56 million by 2030 (Paul, 2012). Their hyper-connectivity and new digital technologies make their influence and mass genuinely formidable. They know how to collaborate and use the strength of their numbers in ways unlike any previous generation.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unlike the noisy demonstrations of their Hippie parents, Millennial protests generally lack hail, sleet and heat. Instead, these twenty-something’s quietly participate in positive social causes without leaving the comfort of their own dorm, home, or parent’s couch, and they reach out to others who share similar concerns via Google hangouts and chat rooms.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In addition, a recent survey by Boston Consulting Group (Paul 2012) reveals that Millennials are active “consumer engagement influencers”; they are more likely to purchase products that support a cause rather than make direct donations (which 34% of them do anyway) — especially from mobile devices.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Because “their lives feel richer when they are connected to people online” (Paul, 2012), 60% of the Millennial population use crowdsourcing to explore brands and share peer-related products and services, videos, images, and blogs to influence or be influenced.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a far cry from the 1960′s “sit-ins” and peace marches, and ultimately more powerful. The ability to collect, connect, and collaborate via social networks allows people to “touch” favorite social causes and contextualize how their efforts are making a difference. One third of those polled also tended to favor brands and programs with Facebook pages and mobile websites that let them share their experiences and thoughts with one another.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Any new technology can be used for good or bad, especially communication technologies. Sure there’s porn, but there’s also the Discovery Channel. Sure there are “hacktivist” movements such as the internet collective “Anonymous” hacking into the CIA, the Church of Scientology, and large corporations. But at the same time, according to social entrepreneur <a href="http://www.blogworld.com/author/ahrif/" style="color: #f18e08; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;" title="Ahrif Sarumi">Ahrif Sarumi</a>, “Millennials are pioneering ways to give back to their communities, sharing actionable solutions to social issues, and galvanizing others who believe real impact is sometimes only a send button away.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unlike the short-lived rebellious youth of their parents (after all didn’t all those so-called Hippies later become Yuppies??), the power and influence exerted by Millennials is turning out to be more long-lasting and durable. As William Deresiewicz writes in “The Entrepreneurial Generation” (2011):</span></div>
<blockquote style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 1px; line-height: 21.984375px; margin: 0px 0px 1.571em 0.786em; padding: 0px 0px 0px 0.786em;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> “…Unlike those of previous youth cultures, the hipster (<i style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">aka, Millennial</i>) ethos contains no element of rebellion, rejection or dissent — remarkably so, given that countercultural opposition would seem to be essential to the very idea of youth culture. That may in turn be why the hipster has proved to be so durable. The heyday of the hippies lasted for all of about two years. The punks and slackers held the stage for little more than half a decade each. That’s the nature of rebellion: it needs to keep on happening. … But hipsters, who’ve been around for 15 years or so, appear to have become a durable part of our cultural configuration.”</span></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.984375px; margin-bottom: 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So what if we don’t see them standing on a picket line? Instead, the Millennial generation understands how to leverage digital resources to support causes in ways we never could have dreamed of. Why not put your Millennial assumptions aside and read the recent <a href="http://themillennialimpact.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/TheMillennialImpactReport2012.pdf" style="color: #f18e08; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">2012 Millennial Impact Report</a> that explores their relationships with nonprofits. <div class="entryContent">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Transmedia storytelling can be integrated into education, marketing,
social change and other areas in a myriad of ways, but one thing it always
offers--regardless of the arena--is </span><i style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">choice</i><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">. Telling stories in different forms on different
platforms opens the door to produce complex reflections, to take classic linear
methods of expression and weave them into the tapestries of unique observations
and understanding. Rather than following
the traditional path of beginning, middle, climax, ending, the story creator
and/or reader is provided with the freedom and opportunity to devise multiple
outcomes.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">As mentioned in another blog I wrote for CyberWise.org (</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><a href="http://cyberwise.org/BeCyberWise-Blog.html?entry=transmedia-edu-and-native-multitaskers"><span style="color: #0f11ff;"><i>Transmedia and Teaching Native Multitaskers</i></span></a></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0f11ff;"><i>,</i></span> <i>4/13/12</i>), transmedia narratives
touch on many areas in education on a global scale. To help you navigate the often baffling labyrinth
of its definitions and applications, I have assembled a list of 34 great
transmedia storytelling resources below.
I hope these resources will serve as starting point for discovering
practical ways to teach and utilize these demanding new literacy skills in
our schools and in our lives.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Transmedia in the Classroom has the potential to engage students
and allow them to absorb information in a way that they have become accustomed
to in their social lives and entertainment consumption. Through Transmedia, it

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">@getideas.org In 1883, the advent of distance education (or

with machines. Machines, some believed, were beginning to make a shift from a
previously passive learning experience for some to an active one, at least in
the sense that it enabled a more individualized instruction.</span></div>

<em>Man is, at one and the same time, a solitary being and a social being. As a solitary being, he attempts to protect his own existence and that of those who are closest to him, to satisfy his personal desires, and to develop his innate abilities. As a social being, </em><em>he seeks to gain the recognition and affection of his fellow human beings, to share in their pleasures, to comfort them in their sorrows, and to improve their conditions of life. – Albert Einstein</em></div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
This summer, I have had the fortunate opportunity to handle social media for the live tapings of the hit NBC show, “America’s Got Talent” (AGT). Now in its sixth season in the U.S, the talent competition show features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, and more who compete for $1 million and a Las Vegas headliner show. Ultimately, the results of their fate are decided by an audience vote.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
Whether they come from Wasilla, Lubbock, or New York City, the contestants arrive in Hollywood with big dreams and often little knowledge of how powerful the voice of social media can be. NBC, on the other hand, does. To help encourage viral messaging (and thereby increase audience participation and viewing), NBC.com hosts social media portals for each individual contestant on Facebook, Twitter and an NBC/AGT website blog. Contestants are instructed to only use these portals during the run of the show and post only in context of AGT (not other gigs) or risk eligibility.</div>
<div class="entry">
Since most of them are unfamiliar with branding themselves through digital storytelling, one of my assignments as a social media publicist is to advise and guide the contestants on how to best tell their stories on different social media platforms. After all, the better the storytelling, the better the audience interaction and participation in the show, all which can ultimately translate in to higher votes—and network ratings.</div>

We are Prosumers in the Connected Age</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
We are living in the Connected Age of the prosumer. Up until now, society as a whole has been living in a consumer culture where TV, film, radio and political media communications were a one-way street and big business had control over their messaging. Thanks to the advent of the Internet, mobile and social technologies, society has evolved into a participatory culture where the public is no longer just a consumer but rather a <em>prosumer</em> with the freedom to act as contributors or producers of message content.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
This communication has been accelerated by the iPhone technology by Apple, which shockingly, was only introduced a little over four years ago. As this type of mobile technology has spread across other platforms such as the iTouch, Droid and iPad, so has the ease of use and mobility. As of January, 2010, the average age of a smartphone (WebOS) is 36 years old and downloads 5.7 apps per month (www.admob.com). This means that the use of mobile/social technology has “aged up” in the past few years and the general population is increasingly engaging in creating and utilizing participatory media. Add in the flexibility and portability of social media communication outlets like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, and technologies like the QR code, and the power of the message has suddenly shifted away from big business and into the hands of the prosumer.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
Just like a person expects to have cable service available to them in their neighborhood, this shift in communication power means that people are also increasingly expecting to have interactive media available to them as well. Like cable TV, they don’t have to participate, but they expect to at least have the option available to them if they choose to.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
For this reason, competition shows like “America’s Got Talent” and “Survivor” and live broadcasts of award shows like “The Grammys” and “The Oscars” lend themselves perfectly to the use of participatory media. Viewers can communicate with the talent or each other during the voting and judging process, helping shape their viewpoints and decisions about who is good, who is bad, who should move forward, win or lose.’</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
When people participate in media, it is because they want to be connected, to have a relationship with whatever subject matter they are interacting with.</div>
<div class="entry">
In the tenth season of the hit singing competition show, “American Idol,” one of the singers who won a ticket to Hollywood was Chris Medina. Not only was he talented, but he also had a moving back story about how his fiancé had suffered a brain injury right before they were to be married. While his talent as a singer was worthy of moving high up in the competition, people were also moved by his strength to stand by his fiancé despite the tragedy. This emotional connection motivated viewers to start following Medina across all media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook as well as entertainment news, which surely led to greater success on the show.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
In another example, if there are two contestants who look, sing and dance exactly like Christina Aguilera, the chances are—like with Chris Medina–the one with the best story will win. Why? Because we aren’t just living in the Information Age any longer, we are living in the Connected Age. Humans are social by nature, and in today’s world it is not as much about whether people are physically or electronically connecting, it’s about in what context the communication is being told.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
A typical tweet or Facebook post would be something like, “I’m so nervous about going on stage in an hour.” That’s normal and expected, and also not very connecting. If a person said instead, “I’m so grateful my grandmother put me in a choir, because at least I have experience and God’s on my side when I go out there,” it’s more personal. This perceived intimacy provides more bonding, making the reader feel more connected and willing to invest their time and emotions into efforts of the person tweeting.</div>
<div class="entry">
<br /></div>
<div class="entry">
That’s why I have been telling contestants that more than ever before, content is King and context is Queen, and they must be married together. The way Batman would tweet as an animated series is different than a live action film, comic book, novel, or age-appropriate Halloween costume, mobile app or video game. Yet no matter what platform Batman’s story is told, there are still things that Batman would and wouldn’t do. The content and parameters are so consistent and strong, that as long as the stories are told in context, the quality of the character stays intact and so does the brand. The same goes with their own personal branding.</div>

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">I was mesmerized by the range of ideas and applications for multi-platform narratives that circulated during the <i>Transmedia Hollywood: Visual Culture and Design </i>(@transmediahwood) conference at UCLA this month. Co-sponsored by UCLA and USC, the one-day public symposium explored the role of transmedia franchises in today's entertainment industries and offered many inspiring interchanges and insights about how transmedia works and what it means. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">I was particularly intrigued by the first session, “‘Come Out 2 Play’: Designing Virtual Worlds from Screens to Theme Parks and Beyond.” Comprised of several panelists who are all experts in theme park design, these high-concept thinkers provided a rare glimpse into how to structure a franchise around not just the core of a narrative, but the physical exploration of a world as well.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">I have always thought that <i>story=content=the King of all messaging</i>. In most instances, story (aka content) is the base of all messaging and without a good story, everything else around it will fail. At the core, this may hold true when it comes to designing theme park and resort attraction design, but it doesn’t always translate in the traditional ways one would think. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">As USC’s Dr. Henry Jenkins explained to the crowd, “Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated plan experience. <i>Ideally, each medium makes its own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story</i>.”</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">In the instance of theme parks, the story is just one part of an entire resort experience, which includes various methods of narrative for each experience, such as hotels, dining, retail, transportation, and of course, theme park rides. Because the story is a collection of not just mini-tales but <i>experiences,</i> there is not enough time to tell the whole story in the time frame a theme park/resort experience will allow.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Unlike other transmedia narratives, such as comic books, videogames and mythological stories dreamed up by fans, the theme park medium has several particularly unique considerations when replicating and unfolding “real life” virtual experiences.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">when replicating and unfolding “real life” virtual experiences.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";"><br />
One of the theme park subjects that the panelist discussed in great detail was “<i>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” </i>an exciting new area of Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando that celebrates all things Harry Potter."</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">There were some surprising aspects involved in the design and fabrication of this highly successful theme park area that is based on the <i>Harry Potter</i> books and the “tentpole franchise” that resulted from its success.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER: CHARMING THE MUGGLES</span></i></b><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Designers recognized it was important for the <i>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter</i> world-building of be an experience that is authentically based on the rich, imaginative text created by the author, J.K. Rowling, as well as the special visual effects and fantasy environments created for the films by Warner Bros. To help ensure its “realism,” they made sure to run everything by both Rowling and the studio starting from the very first concepts, to taste testing the “ButterBeer” concoction (which sold 1.5 million cups in 18 months), to the design of the signature attraction called <span style="color: #333333;">Harry Potter & The Forbidden Journey. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">The good news is the <i>Harry Potter </i>mythology provides fantastic environments to work with which helped them produce immersive stories that engage all of the senses. It also involves compelling characters that readers and fans have connected to for years.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">The flip side is that the team of developers and designers were also faced with the challenge of creating a magical experience that lived up to what fans had read in books and seen in the movies. If that wasn’t enough, they had to meet safety issues and never-been-done before technical design requirements and expectations (such as a ride that replicates a sense of real flying in a Quidditch match). The real magic was doing this seamlessly, transitioning between projected images and real world sets, without people realizing it.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";"><em><strong>CASTING A SPELL OF ILLUSION</strong></em></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">“In a film you have the advantage that everything is media. It’s not a real world, the camera sees only what the director wants us to see, and the audience never gets a chance to look around. In <i>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter</i>, everything is as real as can be from the stones in Hogsmeade to the floating wand in the Ollivanders shop window, the animated paintings in Hogwarts castle and the characters from the films appearing throughout <i>Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,”</i> explained Senior Vice President, Creative Studio for Universal Parks & Resorts Thierry Coup (Salton, 2011).</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Designers faced another challenge: in order to recreate the visual story, they had to create replicated environments that were pleasing, entertaining for all ages (and not too scary) and also be built to scale. Besides safety and believability, they had to break all the rules of perfect retail design in order to accommodate the large throngs of crowds while still keeping the experience authentic and intimate. Not an easy task considering the attraction has to pump 30 thousand people a day through the curving streets. If not done right, it definitely would have altered the interactive value of the entire resort experience.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Fortunately, the original art designers from the movies welcomed the opportunity to assist. <i>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter</i> gave them the rare chance to finally complete their vision. Participating allowed them to tell more than what they originally designed, and on a permanent and broader scale. From castles to real life merchandise (not props!), they had a field day. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";"><strong><em>UNDER THE CHARM OF SUSPENDED REALITY</em></strong></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Theme park attractions are not like 3D monitors at home… once you enter it you live with experiences and if done properly, you think you lived with it in real life. A person virtually becomes an actor while on their vacation, and they have a chance to share their exciting experiences with family and friends. They are given an opportunity to suspend reality as they know it and become engrossed in an illusion in a safe space. Part of their willingness to be immersed is that they know they paid real money to be in a trusted environment where they can experiment, experience, and wonder how things were created.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Universal Studios Florida also brought in the cast to film tailor-made scenes to incorporate into the park. This was done much to the delight of the actors, especially the younger ones, who had grown up virtually spending most of their scenes (and their childhood) for special effects instead of on real sets.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif";">Unlike many other media forms, developing full scale resort attractions requires the ability to create an experiential, magical, visceral experience. As a result, audience expectations grow higher every day. Luckily, the possibilities to satiate their needs remain endless. Like many other evolving transmedia platforms (ARG, 3D gaming, etc.), better technology is allowing designers to increasingly create even more incredible systems that will engage, enhance and transcend an experience to audiences in ways that have never been possible before.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

They contemplated the world in which we live and feel obliged to interpret and give expression to it in a way that makes the reader understand how that world turns. Poets, those unheralded systems thinkers, are our true digital thinkers.” Sidney Harman</span></i><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> (Harman, as cited by Pink, 2006, p.143)<i></i></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">Since the days of ancient history, poetry has been one of the most powerful tools of translating our stories from generation to generation. After all, rhymes are easier to remember and translate than traditional narratives, and through mnemonics, there is less room for error when being repeated. Eventually, many poems were translated into song, making their stickiness even greater. These poems and songs told tales of joy and sorrow, hope and promise, chances killed and dreams fulfilled.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">When mulling over the correlation of this to pop culture, one particular commercial from the 1970s that sang about hope and peace leapt to mind. It was a time of anti-war and civil rights movements, communal living and a longing for interracial, global harmony. Originally a jingle for Coca-Cola (“I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke,”) the famous “1971 Hilltop” song was called “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” and its visuals, words and music married the idea of happiness and universal love with society’s profound yearning for community and human and spiritual connection (<span style="color: blue;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EY8DFqFpws</span>). The song, performed by a group called “New Seekers,” sold 12 million copies.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">This song connected Coca-Cola with a positive social message that offered comfort and warmth during tumultuous times. As one of the most successful commercials in television history, it attempted to open minds to the idea of accepting the differences in human beliefs and cultures. Using a sunrise (or is a sunset?) setting on a hilltop in the “neutral” country of Italy, the visual display of men and women--defined through clothing, style and skin tone--nurtured the idea that we are all connected regardless of gender, race, religion or country.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">As Daniel Pink says in his book, <u>A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future</u>, “Story exists where high concept and high touch intersect. Story is high concept because it sharpens our understanding of one thing by showing it in the context of something else.” </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">What made the “Hilltop” commercial so profound was its ability to convey a universal message of peace and acceptance in <i>context</i> and to deliver them with <i>emotional impact </i>that has since been carried on for four generations. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt;">In the part two of this blog, I will share how Coca-Cola created a refreshingly winning follow up commercial that aired only one time on broadcast television. They not only “shared the love,” but placed its message into perfect context.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

For example, in the game <strong><em>Darfur is Dying</em>,</strong> players must keep their refugee camp functioning in the face of possible attack by Janjaweed militias and is described on their website, <a href="http://www.darfurisdying.com/"><span style="color: #cc3333;">http://www.darfurisdying.com</span></a>:</span></div><div style="line-height: 150%; vertical-align: top;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0.5in; vertical-align: top;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="color: black;"><em><strong>Darfur is Dying</strong> is a viral video game for change that provides a window into the experience of the 2.5 million refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan...Players can also learn more about the genocide in Darfur that has taken the lives of 400,000 people, and find ways to get involved to help stop this human rights and humanitarian crisis.</em></span></span></div><div style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0.5in; vertical-align: top;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%; vertical-align: top;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">In another social change game, <a href="http://www.peacecorps.gov/kids"><span style="color: #cc3333;">http://www.peacecorps.gov/kids</span></a>, kids are able to learn as they explore information about the challenges that the Wanzuzu experience while playing a game. In addition, there are a growing number of teachers who are utilizing specially designed prosocial games in the classroom.</span><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"></span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">With most prosocial games, people are given a set of clear cut rules, the levels adjust to the capability of the player with a careful emphasis in design to not be too easy or too challenging for the participant, the status of advancement, etc. is provided along the way, and the aural and animated graphics are simple and engaging enough to keep the participant focused and engaged. By presenting this information in a way that allows for participants to <em>flow </em>as they go, they are visually, aurally and mentally stimulated in an enjoyable—and most importantly—memorable way. </span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">One social change gaming site, <strong><em>Games for Change</em></strong>, “is a non-profit which seeks to harness the extraordinary power of digital games to address the most pressing issues of our day, including poverty, education, human rights, global conflict and climate change. Games for Change serves as a platform for organizations, individuals, government agencies, academics, journalists and the game industry to share best practices, exchange knowledge, incubate new projects and provide access to those seeking to use digital games to positively impact society” (<a href="http://www.gamesforchange.com/"><span style="color: #cc3333;">http://www.gamesforchange.com/</span></a>). In addition to “<strong><em>Darfur is Dying</em></strong>, there are games for all ages that aim to inform and inspire participants on subjects such as farming (<strong><em>3rd World Farmer</em></strong>), energy (<strong><em>EnerCity</em></strong>), nutrition (<strong><em>Fat World</em></strong>), human rights (<strong><em>Real Lives 2010</em></strong>) and dozens more.</span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">In order for the development and growth of an autotelic personality to be operationalized, a person must be intrinsically motivated in high-challenge, high-skill situations. Videogames are just one example of how the optimal achievement of flow and mindfulness can inform and potentially motivate a person to take steps to affect positive social change.</span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><br />
</div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><i><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">Darfur Is Dying: </span></i><span style="color: #0033cc; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"><a href="http://www.darfurisdying.com/takeaction.html"><span style="color: #0033cc;">http://www.darfurisdying.com/takeaction.html</span></a></span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">Games for Change</span></i><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">: </span><span style="color: #0033cc; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"><a href="http://www.gamesforchange.org/channels/politics"><span style="color: #0033cc;">http://www.gamesforchange.org/channels/politics</span></a></span></div><div style="line-height: 150%;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">Peace Corps Challenge Online Game</span></i><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">: </span><span style="color: #0033cc; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"><a href="http://www.peacecorps.gov/kids/"><span style="color: #0033cc;">http://www.peacecorps.gov/kids/</span></a></span><span style="font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;"></span></div><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"><br />

</div><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 150%;">Finding flow is important in our everyday existence, but it can also be an important element of our use of entertainment and enjoyment.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-add-space: auto; tab-stops: .5in;"><br />
